Anxiety, one of the most common mental health conditions in the world, is a fear based emotion. How people experience anxiety differs greatly from one individual to the next. All levels of anxiety matter, from low-levels of anxiety to feelings of overwhelm.

Counselling and Psychotherapy, a talking therapy, helps clients overcome anxiety. At Oak Tree Holistic Therapies, I use an holistic approach. This involves taking everything about the client into consideration; including mind, body, spirit, environment, family dynamics etc. The intervention used varies according to the individual.

I work, as per my training, using an integrative approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy with the Person-Centred Approach (PCA) as a basis for all therapeutic sessions. The ethos of PCA, is to have compassion, where the client receives empathy, unconditional positive regard and acceptance from the therapist; thus building a healthy client – therapist relationship. I use many approaches and techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, Psychodynamic, Trauma and Body Psychotherapy.

Cognitive Behaviour therapy (CBT) is a technique I use in counselling and psychotherapy and it is a very popular choice of therapy with those suffering with anxiety related issues.  CBT offers a practical approach to helping people change negative thought processes and unhealthy behaviour patterns. A useful tool I use is ‘The Worry Tree’. Some clients find this approach very effective. Another form of CBT I engage in is the use of Socratic Questions which are types of probing questions about client’s thought processes, creating personal awareness, and thus leading to healthy thinking styles. Gestalt therapy focuses the client on their anxieties in the present moment. A concept used in Gestalt is ‘The Cycle of Experience’. It is useful technique I use to bring awareness to the client’s thoughts, behaviours and bodily reactions. Depending upon the client’s needs and wishes, I use mindfulness and breathing techniques. In my experience I have found these techniques effective in helping clients to deal with anxiety.

As each individual is unique so too is each therapeutic session. Many approaches are used to help a client rid their life of anxiety.  A life free from anxiety opens up a whole new world to the individual. My counselling room is a warm and comfortable healing space and I welcome both men and women.
